Post - Production - Editing
We are currently editing the shots taken during our free time and during lessons. This is done by using premier-pro, which is a software that enables us to import our footage and edit it to how we would prefer.
Production - Stills
These are the pictures that were taken on shoot, to be used in the poster and for the dvd covering, by taking these pictures it means that the "advertising" of the film are linked to our movie and through research of previous "film noir" posters we will adapt them to look in their conventions.

Research - Posters
Film noir have very original posters in which are generally similar in terms of style, this may be due to the genre of the film but also the time are in which they were most commonly made.
Overall, they use fairly dark colours and lighting, however all the images are shown in colour as opposed to the film itself in which is in black and white. The writing is also fairly 1940s styling as it represents that time era and displays the colour brightly upon the background.

Production - filming
Today we shot our short film noir, following the roles of :
Me: - Producer
- Lighting
Sami - Director
- Camera
Although we each had individual roles we were able to put forward each of our own opinions and in my opinion worked really well as a team.
I also decided to take my SLR camera and tripod so that we could film behind the scenes and also take still shots... but doing this i thought we could use the photos for our poster and then the "behind the scenes" footage for our evaulations and also as an extra on our final product.
We faced a few problem today in which weren't great but we were able to solve:
- Our original actor for "Charlie Kane" was unable to arrive at the time we'd arranged as he had other arrangements, so we had to find another actor and gratefully jonathon collard stepped in at the last minute.
- i'd not had very much practise in terms of using the lights until an hour before shooting, so i had to use that time briefly to try to attempt different lighting techniques.. such as; using the letterbox lighting upon the femme fatale's eyes, to enhance her feature and her overall beauty.

Planning - Lighting.
I was able to get my lighting certificate yesterday, to ensure that we could use the equipment correctly and safely, by doing this it will prvent any dangerous risk and allow myself to understand the clear safety rules.

Research - Camera Work.
In Film noir there is only generally basic camera work and nothing too complicated which leaves us with basics:
- one shot
- two shot
- wide shot
- establishing shot
- etc.
There is little movement used such as : Pan or the use of a dolly this is because it was so basic in the 1940s and simple shot worked for the types of films that were produced.

Research - Lighting.
Traditionally in film noir, lighting is KEY through the way it can add special techniques to the shots given on screen, such as :
This picture shows the use of Key lighting from beside the camera, which is generally placed on the right side of the camera. Then it showing "Natural" light such as lamposts, etc, this gives the effect of night & although it simply sets the scene it also emphasises light on the characters face giving it shadows and shades.
An origninal "film noir" lighting shot is the use of the blinds, this is when the lights are placed behind the blinds in order to give it a shadow effect. and therefore may give the audience the scene set of an offcie for example. This is very good when doing a wide shot as it can emphasise the location of the character and initially what's happening.
Women were often shot very differently to men in film noirs as it was to show off their beauty and sexuality, for example in the picture on the left a woman is shown in fairly little light, this will be to show her main features rather than her entire body. By doing this we are focusing on upper-torso and face as a opposed to her entire body, also we are somewhat focusing on her "smoking" as this was very popular in the way it made smoking attractive through women doing this.
Also women aren't often shot in harsh lighting, and it is generally softened through using gels, these are what can put on to the light in order to change colour or in this case the soften the light. By doing this it somewhat makes the shot sometimes "blurry" and therefore once again empahsises the beauty of the character. I am aiming to get my lighting certificate tomorrow, so then we can begin filming straight away.
Research - Victoria Sweetine.
Victoria, (The femme Fatale), is ideally going to look somewhat like this & we are aiming to make our actor, Lauren Hughes, look as similar to this as possible:
The idea behind this it to hightlight the characters beautiful features, Her eyes, Lips and bone structure. This will be done with the use of dark colours however we are aiming to make it slightly less "Harsh" through softening the tones slightly and giving her somewhat the traiditional, beautiful woman's look.
By combining both the "innocent" and "Sexy" look we will hopefully be able to create the character we are looking for.. A Femme Fatale
