Post - Production - Editing
We are currently editing the shots taken during our free time and during lessons. This is done by using premier-pro, which is a software that enables us to import our footage and edit it to how we would prefer.
Production - Stills
These are the pictures that were taken on shoot, to be used in the poster and for the dvd covering, by taking these pictures it means that the "advertising" of the film are linked to our movie and through research of previous "film noir" posters we will adapt them to look in their conventions.

Research - Posters
Film noir have very original posters in which are generally similar in terms of style, this may be due to the genre of the film but also the time are in which they were most commonly made.
Overall, they use fairly dark colours and lighting, however all the images are shown in colour as opposed to the film itself in which is in black and white. The writing is also fairly 1940s styling as it represents that time era and displays the colour brightly upon the background.

Production - filming
Today we shot our short film noir, following the roles of :
Me: - Producer
- Lighting
Sami - Director
- Camera
Although we each had individual roles we were able to put forward each of our own opinions and in my opinion worked really well as a team.
I also decided to take my SLR camera and tripod so that we could film behind the scenes and also take still shots... but doing this i thought we could use the photos for our poster and then the "behind the scenes" footage for our evaulations and also as an extra on our final product.
We faced a few problem today in which weren't great but we were able to solve:
- Our original actor for "Charlie Kane" was unable to arrive at the time we'd arranged as he had other arrangements, so we had to find another actor and gratefully jonathon collard stepped in at the last minute.
- i'd not had very much practise in terms of using the lights until an hour before shooting, so i had to use that time briefly to try to attempt different lighting techniques.. such as; using the letterbox lighting upon the femme fatale's eyes, to enhance her feature and her overall beauty.

I was able to get my lighting certificate yesterday, to ensure that we could use the equipment correctly and safely, by doing this it will prvent any dangerous risk and allow myself to understand the clear safety rules.

Research - Camera Work.
In Film noir there is only generally basic camera work and nothing too complicated which leaves us with basics:
- one shot
- two shot
- wide shot
- establishing shot
- etc.
There is little movement used such as : Pan or the use of a dolly this is because it was so basic in the 1940s and simple shot worked for the types of films that were produced.
Some shots include:

Research - Lighting.
Traditionally in film noir, lighting is KEY through the way it can add special techniques to the shots given on screen, such as :
This picture shows the use of Key lighting from beside the camera, which is generally placed on the right side of the camera. Then it showing "Natural" light such as lamposts, etc, this gives the effect of night & although it simply sets the scene it also emphasises light on the characters face giving it shadows and shades.
An origninal "film noir" lighting shot is the use of the blinds, this is when the lights are placed behind the blinds in order to give it a shadow effect. and therefore may give the audience the scene set of an offcie for example. This is very good when doing a wide shot as it can emphasise the location of the character and initially what's happening.
Women were often shot very differently to men in film noirs as it was to show off their beauty and sexuality, for example in the picture on the left a woman is shown in fairly little light, this will be to show her main features rather than her entire body. By doing this we are focusing on upper-torso and face as a opposed to her entire body, also we are somewhat focusing on her "smoking" as this was very popular in the way it made smoking attractive through women doing this.
Also women aren't often shot in harsh lighting, and it is generally softened through using gels, these are what can put on to the light in order to change colour or in this case the soften the light. By doing this it somewhat makes the shot sometimes "blurry" and therefore once again empahsises the beauty of the character. I am aiming to get my lighting certificate tomorrow, so then we can begin filming straight away.
Research - Victoria Sweetine.
Victoria, (The femme Fatale), is ideally going to look somewhat like this & we are aiming to make our actor, Lauren Hughes, look as similar to this as possible:
The idea behind this it to hightlight the characters beautiful features, Her eyes, Lips and bone structure. This will be done with the use of dark colours however we are aiming to make it slightly less "Harsh" through softening the tones slightly and giving her somewhat the traiditional, beautiful woman's look.
By combining both the "innocent" and "Sexy" look we will hopefully be able to create the character we are looking for.. A Femme Fatale

Planning - Shooting Script.
After a few draft scripts we finally completed the Shooting script:
FADE IN.
1. INT. OFFICE – DAY.
BEGIN TITLES.
A cigarette is placed down in a glass ash tray, the smoke swirls up. A hand then travels over to a type writer and starts typing.
END TITLES.
2. EXT. GARDEN – NIGHT.
DETECTIVE KANE V.O.
Richard Pauling is a successful business man; he has his own car dealership, working his way from the bottom to the top. He has his own family that love him dearly. His colleagues see him as a good boss, the big cheese, however there is a dark side to him. Not even a side that his family knew about. After gambling once with his friends he got hooked, loosing lots of money and then doing anything possible to get the money back. Absolutely everything.
A house comes into view. It’s big and vast, with a driveway and gates, the garden expands to the side of the driveway and through a wall we see a pool.
A man is walking through his garden/driveway late at night to get to his door; P.O.V shot showing RICHARD PAULING being followed down the drive. He tries to place his key in the door; he keeps missing it as he has been out drinking. He tries on many occasions, he drops the keys. He bends down to pick them up when someone hits him over the head, repeatedly. As the attacker turns to move away something falls on the floor.
3. INT. HOUSE - HALLWAY – DAY.
A women walks down the stairs, a worried look on her face.
JANE PAULING
(Searching the house)
Richard? Are you down here? Rich? Richard?
After not being able to find RICHARD in the house, she opens the front door. Her hands fly to her mouth as she screams. CAMERA pans down to see her dead husband on the door step.
4. INT. HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY.
JANE and her two DAUGHTERS, SARAH and CAROLYN are sitting on the sofa; they are crying and comforting each other. There is a knock at the front door, JANE gets up and opens it. DETECTIE KANE, in a suit walks in, smiles at the girls huddled on the sofa. He sticks a hand out too JANE.
DETECTIVE KANE
Hello Mrs. Pauling. I am detective Charlie Kane, i am here to, talk to you about, particular things.
JANE PAULING
Of course, girls, can you go upstairs for me.
The girls go upstairs. JANE turns to talk to the DETECTIVE.
The two sit down on the sofa beginning to talk.
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE IN.
5. INT. DETECTIVES OFFICE – DAY.
The DETECTIVE is sitting at his desk, in deep thought. The office is small, cramped with just him in, dark and smokey. He hears his door open and looks up. VICTORIA SWEETINE walks in, she looks beautiful, has stepped in, dressed in a glamorous dress and necklace.
VICTORIA SWEETINE
Heard you got the Pauling murder case.
DETECTIVE KANE
Victoria, well don't you look ritzy, but whatcha' want?
VICTORIOA SWEETINE
Well if you’re going to be rude then i will just leave you to it...
DETECTIVE KANE
Victoria, but i do have a murder to investigate. If you’re not going to be any help then please scram.
VICTORIA SWEETINE
Well i may have some knowledge that will be of a, particular interest to you.
DETECTIVE KANE
Have a seat. Hooch? What have you got for me?
VICTORIA SWEETINE
I know every move that Richard Pauling made before he died.
DETECTIVE KANE
Enlighten me.
VICTORIA smiles a sweet smile at him and lights a cigarette.
FADE TO BLACK.

Planning - Costume designs.
I began to think about what kind of basis for each character their costumes would be, and therefore decided to draw a few designs ... not in details, but in order to give an idea of what we want during the production.
For males:
Detective kane:
He will be seen in a formal suit, with a blakc tie, black trousers, black suspenders and a white tie. Throughout the scenes in which he will be shown will be fairly formal and the costume will look smart, by this i mean to give the idea that he is serious in his business of work and is taking this case seriously.
Paul Rauling:
His scenes only involve being "dead", therefore his clothing will be very laid-back and messed up, with a loosened tie and untucked shirt.
For women:
Jane Rauling:
she will be shown as a mother should, with a smart blouse and a pencil skirt. By this it enables the audience to see her personality through being smart and serious especially in this situation.
Victoria:
Victoria is shown in an elegant dress, which may resemble her arriving after an evening out, however it explores her nature of beauty, seduction and persuasive personality. By doing this it clearly shows to the audience of how she may be involved through the film as the "femme fatale"

Planning - New storyboard.
After looking in depth at our script and storyboard, we found that it was too long to make a short film with, so we had to cut it down a great deal. Therefore i had to red-do the sotry board with less scenes:
As shown, we decided to simply take out the final scenes and leave it on a "cliff-hanger", therefore using all the conventions needed and in the correct amount of time.

Research - Male Character Biographies.
Sami was able to draw up some ideas for each of the characters to then be put into biographies for each of their personailites and person characters. I then took on board the male characters to look at in more depth...
Detective Charlie Kane
Charlie Kane is a man in which has many focuses in life although takes each of these very seriously in terms of what they mean to him and of his time management.
Whilst growing up his family life was pretty difficult as he lost his loving mother at a young age to whom he was very close with and cared about a great deal, to then disowning his father as a result. His father was very work-orientated due his successful business career but wanted his son to follow in his footsteps whether he wanted to or not. This unfortunate occurance of death and now a lack in role models meant he struggled but fought to live life normally. However he married at a young age through the desperation of feeling loved but found this difficult and it ended shortly with a result of no children and no wife.
Charlie's school years were more of a luxury to get away from his everyday life as he attended a private school in which was taught by the best teachers and held the best academic results for miles around, this was a boarding school in which enables him to escape from home and then occasionally if he felt like it, he could visit home.. this was very rare. Within a few years he became the head boy and rose to top of every single one of his classes showing his success rate to be very high and that one day he would be successful through his own right. After he graduated he soon went on to study at university studying law, as he felt that crimes were committed everyday, someone must help out to prevent this?
After time he decided to join the police force as an officer and aimed to make his way up to the top by all means, although being young, nieve and lacking experience meant that he was let go .. although he was pretty successful as solving the crimes. This lead to Charlie becoming a private detective, due to his experience he knew exactly what was ahead of him and was prepared! This included working against the police and being able to solve the worst crimes committed in history!
Paul Rauling:
Paul's childhood was fairly simple his parents divorced when he was very young and lived very different lives, however Paul loved his mother dearly and never saw his father unless forced too... his mother, Sarah, worked in a local pub where his father, Phillip, moved away shortly after the divorce with his new girlfriend, Rose. He had two sisters called Susan and Rosane in which he loved dearly but grew closer to Rosane over the years after Susan's early death. Through having a single mother and two younger sisters, paul felt the need to help his mother and get out working at a young age and began supporting his family, more than his father ever did.
He attented a state school, as every child did in the area of which he grew up and did fairly well in all subjects but never exceeded above the rest of the class, this lead him leaving school as soon as he could at the age of 14 and went straight out to work.
Throughout his proffession Paul yearned for success, and began working his way from the bottom until he reached his goal, and before long he owned two very successful companies, one of which was a car business following his love and interest of cars ever since he was a child. Money became a slight obsession for while and he joined the stock market in order to gain more money, but maybe this shouldn't have happened, im not sure.
Paul married the lovely Jane when he was 21, and ended up having two daughters, Carolyn and Sarah, in which he adored and would do anything for. This was almost his only family left afetr his mother died, and father moved to Spain.. apart from his sister Rosane of course.

Research - Costumes.
In order to film our movie we must be able to understand "attention to detail", which includes costumes, hair and make-up. As the fashion has changed a great deal over time i thought it would be an idea to look into what the main concept of the costumes would have been:
Males generally were seen in a top hat, with a black tie, suspenders, black trousers and a jacket in which emphasises the fashion of "work" and particularly in the film for the detective role this would have been very important to explain to the audience his occupation but also his personality of being involved with his work throughout the film. Whereas women's costumes were a lot more complex through have a traditional hair style, in which was shown curly, yet straight in a way, but overall very sophisticated. The make-up was often fairly natural as during this era make-up wasnt very popular until the end, this meant at most they would have red lips. Often the costume would be a long elegant dress either black or white however this varies depending on different films. for example in "the big sleep", a young woman is shown in a short tennis outfit of which would've been recognised to be revealing for this time.

Planning - Storyboard.
Today we decided on the story in which we would do:
A rich man is found dead in his garden and is found by his wife who then calls for a private detective. Then the scene goes back in time to show the duration of his life up to the murder whilst the detective is working out what happened. It follows his career as a successful business man and his family dealing with his gambling problems, although it is found that these each link with his death..
I have i just drawn up the storyboard:

Research - Ideas.
We have been able to come up with an idea each and will discuss which idea we will go through with, this may even mean joining the two together:
The opening titles:
a typewriter is being used, with a cigarette going next to it. A woman is typing and the names of the cast are shown on screen as though she is writing them.
My idea:
A man is found dead in his own garden by his wife to whom calls a detective in order to find out what happend to him, who killed him and why he was killed. The body has been found carrying a hankerchief with an emblem emroidered on it linking him to a few rich guys in town owning a casino; the detective takes a visit to each of these "suspects" and finds them all in the same office. After some detailed research to the case it becomes obvious that the top guy is to blame, although where is the evidence? a hunch is simply not good enough to arrest someone...
Sami's Idea:
A buisness man is found murdered in his home and is found lying on the floor by his wife and child. Through running the most successful car dealer business in town he has come to have many rivals and enemies, on the night of his murder, hours before, he goes out with some work collegues for a meal and drinks. His wife and child are in bed by the time he comes in and they don't hear any disturbances. Suddenly, after his death, it comes to light that the man was involved in drug deals annd other such crimes to try and make up the money that he lost in gambling and the stock market. A private detective is hired by the wife to find out the murder. The man's past and recent activities as well as sucessfull buisness leave lots of people with the motive to kill...

Research - Femme Fatale.
What exactly does a "Femme Fatale do?
A "Femme Fatale" is a mysterious and seductive woman whose charms trap or ensnare her lovers in bonds of irresistable desire, often leading to them compromising, deadly and dangerous situations. The phrase in French means "Deadly woman", as she tries to achieve her hidden purpose by using femine wiles such as beauty, charm and sexual allure, the typical figue involves her exceptionally well-endowed in addiction to processing these qualities, in some situations she may use Lying or coercion rather than her charm.
In "The Lady for Shanghai", the Femme Fatale played a role of a victim being trapped into a situation she cannot escape and therefore shows the different angles to which her role may be shown. Although they are typical villanous and shown as "antiheroines" and some even repent and become heoines by the end of the story.

Research - Sunset Boulivard
Sunset boulevard a film made in the 1950s and directed by Billy Wilder, the name boulevard arose from the Los Angles and beverly hills boulevard in which joins them. During the beginning it is shown of Joe's struggle with money & being successful in the business as he pleads to people for money, however he also unsuccessful in doing this, therefore he has no other option but to accept a poor-paid job from a newpaper in Ohio and although doesnt want to accept helping Norma with some jobs at home as he owed her a "favour".
As time goes by Joe becomes dependant upon Norma as she falls for him and buys him expensive gifts, but as he realises she has fallen he tried to escape.. but is guilted into moving back when she attempts to commit suicide.
After a great deal of conflict due to the sciprt writing issues and other females feelings for Joe, Norma threatens to shoot herself but when ignored by Joe she shoots him as he leaves & leaves him dead in her pool, as shown in the opening scene.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femme_fatale
What is the story about and how does it convey the story to the audience?
The story is about a young scene writer in which is found dead in a woman's pool to whom is believed to have trapped him as "her man". Her name is Norma Desmond, and uses his financial issues as an excuse to maipulate him. the story is conveyed to the audience through the voice over by Joe (the writer found dead) throughout the film in order to inform the audience of what is happening such as; previous issues leading up to the story.
What production techniques are used to bring the film to life?
In my opinion i found that overall what stood out most in my head was the opening titles and the use of listing the cast and crew members through the same style as the road names, shown above. By doing this is attracts a great deal of attention through it's relation to the street name and therefore the film title, this is displayed through moving along the road and the names appearing on the road as they would to display the road name.
How is it conventional?
The movie uses fairly conventional techniques such as;
- Black and white filming
- smoking
- a murder
- crime scenes
- and the use of a femme Fatale (Norma)
What props and why?
They used police cars and the beginning when the body was discovered displaying to the audience that a crime had been committed and the story would be based on the events of this crime. Also they use the main location at a "large house" which is very conventional of film noir movies and conveys that the characters are from wealth and power, which will convey they're character's actions in the film.
Where is the setting, why is it used & how is it portrayed?
The setting is in "beverly hills" of which is known to be the houses for the rich and therefore displays a great deal of wealth and power from the characters in the film, it also shows contrast between the detectives and the other characters.

Main task - Roles Assigned
Me and Sami got together and began to decide on what roles we would each take on board for the task and also began to brainstorm different ideas for the story that our film would be about...
Roles:
Director - Sami
Producer - Me
Lighting - Me (this will mean that i will have to getmy lighting certificate too)
Editing - sami
Artwork - Together
By assigning these roles it enables us to understand what knowledge that we need to know and therefore if come to find an area difficult can ask for help from the other person.
We also began to look at what storylines we could use and both agreed on this as our main concept:
Opening Scene - a typewriter is shown being used introducing the cast and crew
Beginning - a muder has occurred
- time lapse to show what happened
- then shot goes back from the beginning
This is all we have decided so far..

Research - Auto-Biography Of A "Bad" Guy.
I wrote down an idea of what the ideal "bad" guy of the 1940s - 1950s era would come across like, although does seem to be slightly extreme...
The name’s Tony Shaw, I’m 48 years old and have a wife, Sandra, and three kids, James, Jonny and Samantha. I see myself as quite a family man and will do anything to support them, I mean they’re my world and wouldn’t be who I am today without them.
My work is pretty private, and I don’t really talk about it much not even to my family.. In fact especially to my family I wouldn’t want them to know. You see my business of work involves a bit of violence to those who “disappoint” me, as I do not like to be disappointed, I have many clients that know not to cross me or bad things may happen. My two right hand guys; Michael and John do the work I need doing; you know what I mean they get the job done right! All I would say is don’t upset me and especially don’t upset them, that would be a big mistake for you to do, let me give you an example; One guy a few months back owed me a great deal of money however found himself unable to pay by the date I had set for him, unfortunately this meant Michael and John had to pay him a visit and ensure my money would be coming sometime soon.
Although I say that I am a family man I have my secrets, everyone does, but the thing is I’m careful in the way I go about things such as my line of work and my girlfriend. As the wife if busy being a mother and dealing with family situations I help her by having a girlfriend, I mean not that she knows about this but what she doesn’t know won’t her. The girlfriend’s name is rose and she works for me as an assistant, this is good as she knows how to handle me and to not cross the line, therefore we have a sensible relationship... on her part anyway.
There’s not much more to my life, pretty much involved with a few bad things which I would regret but if I didn’t have that I’d be no-one, it makes me who I am, well that plus everything else I have going on.
Research - The Big Sleep.
In the film “the big sleep”’; a rich man is being blackmailed and has called a private detective to help him find out who is doing this and why. The audience are told this through the dialogue and props such as: the old man talks about how he is being blackmailed & shows the detective some paper slips as proof.
What production techniques are used to bring this film to life?
Throughout the film there was a series of techniques used:
- Non diegetic sound; in the opening titles with loud, intense music
- Back lighting; to emphasise the time of day and key lighting on the characters
- Camera shots; on the women very blurred, focusing on her features to show her beauty and feminine side.
- Costumes; fairly “typical”, with a white shirt for the detective
- Silhouettes and smoking (in the opening titles)
How is it conventional?
What props & why?
A large house, cigarettes and alcohol were used in the duration of the film because it expressed the “fashion” at that time. For example women that were seen smoking and drinking alcohol meant that it would have been seen as a “cool” thing at that time and therefore set a trend for other women. Where the setting, why is it used & how is it portrayed?
The setting of the film was generally based at a large house to show the storyline involved a rich family/man; it was also a very dominant setting showing that they may be very dominant characters. I feel that the house was a main location as it’s seen as a convention for the film noir movies and an affluent location.
Why do you think they kept it black & white in an era that has colour film?
By keeping the film Black and white during an era in which had discovered colour film it enables the film to take the audience back to an earlier time zone through lighting & ambience, it also makes the character and storyline have a glamorous edge. By this technique it can enable the lighting effects to be used in different aspects and therefore will make it a great deal easier to connote from the audiences point of view.
What sort of titling and music is used throughout?
The opening titles was shown using silhouettes of people smoking in the background and fairly basic titling on the foreground, by showing smoking again it shows the role model idea of the activity and emphasized the “cool-ness” of it. Also the music throughout the opening titles is intense and dramatic to show that something has happened.
Who are the main characters and how are they portrayed?
Female 1 – A long shot is used to introduce her character as she is shown in a short tennis outfit with her legs emphasised in the shot. By this is portrays her character as a playful and teasing personality that sometimes crosses the line with her attitude.
Detective – he’s shown very serious about his work by the way he ignores the flirtatious attitude of the females and uninterested of her behaviour.
What sorts of costumes were used and what does this say about the characters?
The detective wore a white shirt, black tie and black trousers, showing that he was serious about his work but he wore this in a fairly “laid-back” aspect with the top button of his shirt undone & his tie worn loosely and therefore may show that although he takes his role and job seriously at times he will relax.

Main Task - Storyline ideas
I wrote down some ideas of what the storyline of my film noir may be to then discuss with sami about which story we want to go for. Personally i have one that i love but will see what sami thinks as it will involve a fair bit of work, hopefully it will work really well, i am also planning on watching a few movies in order to get some more ideas of what could be included.
